The origin of the Halloween pumpkin

Have you ever wondered why we carve pumpkins on Halloween, or where this tradition came from? We were wondering that too, until we discovered the story of stingy Jack, a man so cunning that he managed to deceive the devil twice.

Jack was an Irishman, known for his shrewdness and for being an asset. One day the devil came to visit him to take his soul. But Jack convinced him to go to a bar for one last beer first. There he asked the devil to convert into a coin so he could pay, but instead he kept it in his pocket next to a crucifix, so the devil couldn't change his shape. In exchange for freeing him, Jack asked the devil to let him live 10 more years, to which he agreed. After ten years Satan returned to get Jack, and he told him that before he died he wanted to eat one last apple. So they both went to an apple tree, but before the devil knew it, Jack had surrounded the apple tree with crucifixes, trapping it again. This time, in exchange for his release, Jack asked him to never take his soul to hell. So when he died he went to enter heaven, but they rejected him because of his bad behavior. Then he went to hell, but the devil also denied him entry, condemning him (as punishment for his deceptions) to wander eternally without being admitted anywhere. With a turnip and a flame from hell, he built a flashlight to illuminate the path, creating the Jack o'Lantern.

It turns out that when the tradition arrived in America, due to the surplus of pumpkins and their popularity in the country's cuisine, it went from carving turnips to carving pumpkins. This created the Jack o'lanterns with carved pumpkin that we know. Another change that Americans introduced to the holiday was the name of the celebration, since it was adopted for All Hallows Eve, which turned to the abbreviation “Halloween” that we know today.

Now that you know its story, don't wait any longer to book Halloween at HolaCamp and come and carve your own Jack o'lanterns!
