What to do in Mequienza on a weekend

Blog publicado el Dec 18, 2025 por Olivia Jero

At HolaCamp, we fell in love with Mequinenza when we discovered it. Because it's the perfect setting for getaways that begin with the simple idea of disconnecting and end up becoming anecdotes that you tell over and over again.

If you are looking for a different weekend, with nature, history, good food, next to the river and where it seems that life is going without haste, HolaCamp Mequinenza is your place. And since we want you to fall in love with Mequinenza as much as we do, we leave you the definitive guide to what to do in Mequinenza on a weekend. And who knows, maybe one of your next ones will be born from this getaway #CampStories.

Visit Mequinenza

Old Town of Mequinenza

Start your getaway by strolling through the Old Town, an old town rebuilt to invite you to discover corners, houses and squares where stories from the past still float.

Stroll through its streets and discover the most emblematic points: the old church, the birthplace of the writer Jesús Moncada and the different squares of the town. Time slows down here so you can enjoy a quiet getaway and reconnect with the essentials.

And the best part: the Mequinenza Castle will be the setting for your entire visit, making sure that you feel inside a postcard.

Mequinenza Museums

The three museums in Mequinenza offer you three ways to travel without leaving town.

If you've never been down a mine... the time has come. In the Mine Museum In Mequinenza you can discover more than 1,000 meters of coal mine galleries. With helmets, stories of miners and anecdotes that make you imagine what it was like to work underground.

On weekends there are guided tours that we recommend you book in advance through your Official website.

Visiting the History Museum you will understand one of the town's most striking stories: The disappearance of ancient Mequinenza under the waters of the Ebro River. All this through photographs, everyday objects, testimonies and much more.

To top off the most cultural part of your trip, you can visit the Museum of the Prehistoric Past, ideal for imagining how our ancestors lived when Mequinenza was only wild nature. Whether you're a lover of archeology or if you're just curious and eager to learn, this is a stop you can't miss!

Mequinenza Castle

Although guided tours only take place on Tuesdays, you can visit the imposing Castle, which is not only steeped in history, but also offers breathtaking views of the confluence of the rivers.

And if we have convinced you to extend your trip and take the guided tour, you should know that it is free and can be done every working Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The groups are accompanied by guides and staff from the Mequinenza City Council. However, we recommend that you book at least a week in advance because it usually gets full.

Plans by the river

Catfish fishing

If there is something famous in Mequinenza, more than the river and the castle if possible, it is the catfish. A fish that usually exceeds 2m in length and weighs 100 kg and is capable of leaving even those who don't like fishing with their mouths open.

We recommend that you go with a guide and wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting wet, so you'll be ready to live #CampStories that will amaze everyone who listens to them.

Birdwatching in the Aiguabarreig of the Ebro, Segre and Cinca rivers

One of the most special places near Mequinenza is the Aiguabarreig, where the Ebro, Segre and Cinca rivers meet. This mix of waters and landscapes has created an ideal environment for many birds that have adopted it as their home.

Here you can find imperial herons, eagles, cormorants, storks and many more birds that will surprise you.

Our recommendations:

  • Bring binoculars, little ones will love to see the birds up close.
  • The best hours are first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Be patient: this natural spectacle has no start time, but also no end time.

It's a perfect plan if you're looking for calm, nature and a time of disconnection (and reconnection).

Other places you shouldn't miss

  • Mirador del Ebro: you will be amazed by views that you will not want to forget.
  • Embarcadero del Ebro: ideal for walking and spending a quiet afternoon near the water.
  • Fishermen's refuge: a spectacular corner next to the river, perfect for a picnic.
  • Mequinenza Reservoir: let yourself be surprised by its extension, it is also known as the “Aragon Sea”, needless to say more.

Extra Day: Trip to Zaragoza

If you have an extra day or want to complete your weekend with a more urban touch, Zaragoza is at 1 hour 30 min by car and it's very worth it.

What to see on a quick visit to Zaragoza

  • Basilica del Pilar: iconic, photogenic, essential.
  • La Seo: a mix of architectural styles that amazes anyone.
  • El Tubo: tapas, atmosphere and that “we're having a snack” that turns into a small feast.

Perfect to give the trip some of that characteristic city vitality before returning to the tranquility of HolaCamp Mequinenza.
